Standing on the Shoulders of Giants
Did you know?
The Hollies sued Radiohead for their top 10 hit 'Creep' due to the melody and chord progression being too similar to their 1972 song 'The Air That I Breathe'. Radiohead settled and gave an out-of-court settlements to writers Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood (The Hollies).
Fast forward to 2018, Radiohead then sued Lana Del Rey for her song 'Get Free' as they claimed it was too similar to 'Creep'! The settlement of that dispute was never publicized but Del Rey has continued to play the song in front of live audiences.
Listen to all three back-to-back and you will no doubt hear the similarities.
What's the point?
It made me think about how we are always looking for something original but sometimes using something that works and adapting it slightly is the best policy. For example, we are always looking for a fund manager with a new or original way of looking at investments but how many are just adapting tried and tested strategies.
There is no right or wrong with this but searching for something original is just very hard.
